That landmark makes DTM one of the world’s longest running race series, having so far completed 498 races across 342 event weekends since making its debut in 1984.
Next weekend’s event at the Lausitzring (23-25 August), includes the usual two races – one each on Saturday and Sunday (start at 13.30 hrs on each day), with Sunday’s race the landmark 500th.
The milestone’s venue is suitably appropriate: the Lausitzring’s owner is the internationally leading expertise organisation DEKRA, which itself celebrates its own unique achievement with DTM this year: 30 years of partnership.
Germany’s eastern-most race track has been a regular venue on the DTM calendar for 20 years, beginning in 2000, and with 23 races held at the track.
From Zolder to Fuji
In 35 years, DTM has become a brand renowned across the world. What started as the ‘Deutsche Produktionswagen-Meisterschaft’ in 1984 has become an internationally recognised race series with events held across, Germany, Europe and – imminently – in Asia, when Japan’s Fuji Speedway will host the ‘Dream Race’ between cars from the SUPER-GT series and the DTM, on 23 and 24 November.
‘Feel the roar,’ is the DTM’s motto. However, the DTM is much more than ‘just’ motorsport. Nowadays, the race weekends also provide a varied support programme with a family-friendly festival-like atmosphere including autograph sessions with the stars, live concerts and the opportunity to look behind the scenes of the DTM.

DTM’s success story started in 1984
The DTM’s success story started well before the digital age, on 11 March 1984 at Circuit Zolder with victory for Harald Grohs (GER) in a BMW 635 CSi.
Some interesting facts and figures from (almost) 500 DTM races:
The inaugural season ended with a remarkable feat: BMW driver Volker Strycek (GER) clinched the drivers’ title without scoring a single race win.
Bernd Schneider (GER) collected the most drivers’ titles, five in total. Klaus Ludwig (GER) achieved the second-highest number with three DTM championship titles.
Schneider and Ludwig also sit atop three further DTM rankings: the most race wins (Schneider 43, Ludwig 37), the most points (Ludwig 1,823.5, Schneider 1,808.5) and most race starts (Schneider 236, Ludwig 219).
For much of their careers, both drivers competed for Mercedes-Benz, the most successful brand in DTM history with 195 wins. Audi has racked up 108 victories, BMW has 87 wins to date.
Next to Schneider and Ludwig, Hans-Joachim Stuck was another German motorsport legend to win the title.
With Ellen Lohr (GER), Annette Meeuvissen (GER), Susie Wolff (GBR), Vanina Ickx (BEL), Katherine Legge (GBR), Rahel Frey (SUI), Beate Nodes (GER), Mercedes Stermitz (AUT), Lella Lombardi (ITA), Henny Hemmes (NED) and Traudl Klink (GER), 11 female drivers have competed in the DTM. With 144 race participations and a victory (Hockenheim 1992), Lohr was the most successful.
For Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA), Alexander Wurz (AUT), Jan Magnussen (DEN), Paul Di Resta (GBR), Pascal Wehrlein (GER), Christijan Albers (NED) or Esteban Ocon (FRA) the DTM also served as a stepping stone to Formula 1. Dario Franchitti (GBR) became a superstar in North America after his spell in the DTM, becoming a four-time IndyCar champion and a three-time Indy 500 winner.
Ex-Formula 1 world champions Mika Häkkinen (FIN) and Keke Rosberg (FIN) were successful in the DTM after their years at the pinnacle of motorsport, as were Grand Prix winners David Coulthard (GBR), Ralf Schumacher (GER), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (GER), Alessandro Nannini (ITA), and Jean Alesi (FRA). ‘Mr. Le Mans’ Tom Kristensen (DEN), nine-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours, ranked among the top drivers in DTM from 2004-2009.
The list of DTM guest drivers is impressive: a certain Michael Schumacher (GER) raced in the DTM on several occasions in 1990 and 1991. Juan-Pablo Montoya (COL) won the IndyCar championship, the Indy 500 twice as well as seven Formula 1 Grands Prix. Just like Montoya, Christian Fittipaldi (BRA), the nephew of two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) and the uncle of current DTM driver Pietro Fittipaldi (BRA) raced as a guest driver in 1996. Last year, six-time world rally champion Sébastien Ogier (FRA) raced a Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM at Spielberg; this year, MotoGP star Andrea Dovizioso (ITA) raced an Audi RS 5 DTM at his home track in Misano Adriatico. The guest start by Alessandro Zanardi (ITA) in a specially adapted BMW M4 DTM at the same venue last year also remains unforgettable.
By the way, even Gerhard Berger (AUT), chairman of the DTM’s umbrella organisation ITR since 2017, once raced in the DTM. In 1985, Berger finished eighth at Zolder with a BMW 635 CSi run by the Schnitzer team.
Other sporting greats to have raced in the DTM include skiing legend Franz Klammer (AUT), four-time Le Mans winner Yannick Dalmas (FRA) and rally stars Walter Röhrl (GER) and Markku Alén (FIN).
Since 1984, the DTM has held races at 38 different circuit. The circuit with the most races to its name is the Hockenheimring (93) followed by Nürburgring (80) and Norisring (46). With the 500th race at the Lausitzring, the track in the German province of Brandenburg moves up into fourth place in the rankings with 25 races.
For the record: the 498 races so far include all 36 races of the ITC from 1995 and 1996, the years in which the DTM was sanctioned by motorsport’s global governing body FIA under the ‘International Touring Car Series’ and ‘International Touring Car Championship’ banner, the 10 races of the ITR Gold Cup (1991, 1993, 1994), the DTM invitation race in Shanghai in 2004 as well as the three races in Salzburg (1988) and Berlin (1995) that were started, but remained without classification after being halted. The races at the Lausitzring in 2000 that were eventually cancelled due to heavy rain, on the other hand, haven’t been counted, and neither have the DTM events at Munich’s Olympic stadium (2011, 2012).

“In all honesty, the first who comes to mind is Hans Werner Aufrecht. He is the father of the DTM and saved the series several times over the years. After the collapse at the end of 1996, Aufrecht resurrected the DTM in 2000. Back then, he also reactivated me and asked me whether I would support the reconstruction as one of the crowd pleasers. I ended up third in the championship at the age of 50 – something you don’t take for granted. Since then, the DTM has had 18 years with great, great races and many spectators. For me, Aufrecht is the man of the DTM if ever there were one. Looking back at my spell in the DTM sparks a lot of joy and also a certain sense of pride. There were many great people I met and with whom I was allowed to work. All in all, those days went by way too quickly.”
