Sam Bird will start the Buenos Aires ePrix from his and DS Virgin’s first-ever Julius Baer pole position.
The two-time race winner was only fourth in the qualifying group stages, but put a lap together when it mattered to seal a crucial pole.
“It’s our first pole so I’m delighted for the team,” he said. “Let’s see what happens in the race – we’re going to give it our best shot. The aim was a podium and that’s definitely a reality now.”
Nico Prost will line-up alongside Bird on the front row, but it was a terrible session for his Renault e.dams team-mate Sebastien Buemi. The championship leader spun on his 200kW lap and will start from 18th and last on the grid.
Stephane Sarrazin was the fastest man in the group stages, but the Venturi driver was unable to repeat his performance and will line up fourth, just ahead of his new team-mate Mike Conway, who did an exceptional job to make it to Super Pole.
But arguably the performance of the day was from Antonio Felix da Costa, who will line-up third in the Team Aguri car using season one technology. He was just 0.01s off the front row too.
With Buemi in trouble it was the perfect opportunity for Lucas di Grassi to capitalise, but he made a small error on his flying lap and missed Super Pole and will start seventh, behind Robin Frijns, who starts sixth for Andretti.
